Hudson Generating Station Decommissioning & Demolition

Independence Excavating (IX) was contracted by Hilco Redevelopment Partners (HRP) to complete the full environmental decommissioning and demolition of the former coal-fired power plant Hudson Generating Station in New Jersey located on a 120-acre site. The coal-fired power plant formerly owned by PSE&G, was the 4th largest plant we’ve been involved with in terms of both scrap tonnage and former electric mega-watt (MW) output. The Hudson Generating Station was

located in Jersey City, New Jersey, 4.5 miles from the heart of lower Manhattan. Our scope of work included utility disconnects, permitting, equipment salvage, asbestos abatement, universal and regulated waste removal, all structural demolition including multiple explosive felling events, scrap processing and sale, concrete and asphalt removal, concrete crushing for reuse onsite, and coordination with the environmental consultant/Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) regarding remediation efforts of impacted areas to support HRP’s development efforts.

A highly visible project located within a densely populated urban environment, IX worked closely with authorities ranging from the Jersey City Building Department to the Department of Homeland Security to successfully complete the project. In addition, local union participation was one of the key requirements of the project and to this end, IX partnered with local unions to perform 100% of the project.
